LAOS: Ceremonies were held in the northern city of Luang Prabang on December 25 to mark the launch of construction of the 414·3 km rail link from the Chinese border to Vientiane.
Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith formally turned the first sod and struck a gong to mark the start of construction. He was accompanied by former Deputy Prime Minister of Somsavat Lengsavad, Chinese Ambassador Guan Huabing, and Minister of Public Works & Transport Bounchanh Sinthavong, as well as the Chairman of the Laos-China Railway Co Huang Difu, General Manager of China Railway International.
Bounchanh said that the railway would be of ‘great significance’ in boosting socio-economic development, strengthening economic ties between China and the ASEAN region, as well as boosting trade, investment and tourism. ‘Once completed, the railway will benefit Lao people of all ethnic groups, reducing the cost of transport, and stimulating the development of the agricultural and industrial sectors’ he explained.
Huang told the guests that engineering design had been underway since the signing of the formal project agreement in November 2015, along with the setting up of LCRC and the award of construction contracts to various China Railway Group subsidiaries. Land acquisition and site clearance have also been making good progress, he reported. This has included the removal of undeploded ordnance.
Starting from the current CRC railhead at Mohan on the China-Laos border and passing through the Laotian border town of Boten, the 1 435 mm gauge line will then run south to the capital the cities of Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng. It will terminate at Nong Khai which is currently served by a metre-gauge cross-border link from Thailand.
Although Chinese contractors have been building and operating railways in many parts of the world for more than four decades, the line to Laos is the first such railway linking directly to the CRC network across the Chinese border. The single track electrified mixed-traffic line is to be built to China’s GB Grade 1 standards, suitable for 160 km/h passenger and 120 km/h freight trains. The mountainous terrain will require 258·5 km of bridges and tunnels. The cost is estimated at 37·4bn yuan, and construction is expected to take five years.

This will be the airline group’s 70th intra-Asean route connecting all ten Asean countries, as well as the airline’s fourth route into Laos after Kuala Lumpur – Vientiane, Bangkok – Vientiane and Bangkok – Luang Prabang.
Spencer Lee, AirAsia’s head of commercial said: “This route has been something that we have worked very hard on, and we are pleased to finally make this announcement. We hope our guests will not miss the opportunity to grab the Free Seats to Luang Prabang and experience what this unique destination has to offer.
“AirAsia is proud to offer another international connection within the Asean region to connect the people and close the borders to create a true ASEAN Community. A UNESCO World Heritage city, Luang Prabang is  located approximately 300km north of Vientiane at the confluence of the Mekong River and the Nam Khan River. Visitors can see the ‘Tree of Life’ mosaic set at Wat Xieng Thong, partake in the traditional alms giving with the locals, swim in the azure pool at the Kuang Si Waterfalls and savour Khao Soi – a local noodle soup dish that can be found at food stalls running along Luang Prabang streets.

The low-cost carrier has been waiting in the wings for eight years to open this route, which will push the Asean Economic Community closer together, particularly Thailand and Laos.
Within Asean, the airline still does not operate to the Philippines and Brunei. However, Vientiane is most likely to be its next destination.
Luang Prabang was one of the top five destinations recommended to visit in the world, he said.
It is one of two CLMV cities along with Angkor Wat in Cambodia that are recommended to visit.
According to statistics, more than 4 million tourists visited Laos last year, with half of them coming from Thailand.
Arrivals from third countries are expected to increase as more flights are added.
Tourism contributes 3-4 per cent of Laos’ economy. It is expected to climb to 7 per cent in the near future.
The flight to Luang Prabang takes just over one hour from Bangkok.
"Luang Prabang has many distinct travel features, from its local lifestyle and culture to its natural attractions.
"This latest route also creates new investment opportunities. We are confident that as a friendly destination, Luang Prabang will quickly grow to be a popular place to visit for both Thai and international travellers," he said.
Tickets can now be booked at introductory fares starting at Bt990 until February 14 for travel from March 24 to February 5 of next year.
AirAsia Group has the most exten-|sive network of destinations in Asean. Thai AirAsia connects Thailand to seven Asean countries via 15 routes to 12 destinations.
